Max生长在纽约。他是Rita和Thomas von Essen的四个孩子中最小的一个。他的母亲Rita现在半退休在家，是八个孩子的祖母。父亲Thomas是一名职业消防员，在9·11袭击时即为纽约消 防长官。Max的自传”Strong of Heart”最近由里根图书发行。他的其他发行作品还有《我爱你，妈妈！》，这本书由亥伯龙图书发行，包括了从演艺人员到政府官员写的文章，分享他们与他 们母亲之间的故事。

2004年1月，Max的第一次个人演唱会作为“Broadway Spotlight”系列售罄，加上他随后的两场在Ars Nova剧院的演唱会也大获成功。
